Statement by the Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Roberta S. Jacobson

Strengthening transparency and government accountability is a central element of our engagement and of the Alliance for Prosperity and the U.S. Strategy for Engagement in Central America.

The government of Honduras has made significant strides forward in this regard, inviting Transparency International into the country to assist in setting up mechanisms to ensure public accountability, and charging a number of senior officials with corruption.

The fight against corruption is difficult in any country and requires strong political will to make democratic governance truly serve citizens’ needs.

The United States supports the efforts of all Hondurans to promote transparency and bring to justice those responsible for corruption.

Honduras has been and remains a strong partner of the United States and a regional leader.
