The U.S. Embassy has received information that traffic is backed up around the Toncontin International Airport and the National Congress in Tegucigalpa due to the strikes of the informal sector of public transportation. If at all possible, avoid these areas today, Dec 8, 2015. There is no information that suggests this protest and/or other actions are directed against U.S. citizens, interests or facilities. Please ensure you take appropriate precautions.
We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Honduras enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
Regularly monitor the State Department’s website at Department of State Website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, (including the Travel Warning for Honduras), Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution. Read the Country Specific Information for Honduras at Country Specific Information. For additional information, refer to “A Safe Trip Abroad” on the State Department’s website.
