SECURITY ALERT – U.S. Embassy Tegucigalpa, Honduras (October 15, 2020)
LOCATION: Tegucigalpa, Honduras
EVENT: On October 15, 2020, two rival Tegucigalpa-based soccer teams, Motagua and Olimpia, will meet for a high-profile soccer match scheduled to take place at 5:00 p.m. in the National Stadium. Although there will not be any spectators in the National Stadium, the pre-game and after-game celebrations associated with this rivalry have historically been marred by violence from their fan clubs or bars in the areas surrounding the stadium. In August 2019, supporters of these two teams violently clashed outside the stadium.
These celebrations are usually confined to the area surrounding the National Stadium. Traffic will be affected beyond the National Stadium area as the police may establish a security perimeter several hours ahead of the match. U.S. citizens should avoid the National Stadium area and are reminded to maintain awareness of their surroundings as even peaceful celebrations may turn violent with little or no notice.
ACTIONS TO TAKE:
- Avoid travel to the areas surrounding the National Stadium.
- Avoid crowds.
- Beware aware of your surroundings.
- Keep a low profile.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Notify friends and family of your safety.
