On Sunday, March 12, 2017 Honduran primary elections will take place for three major political parties. The U.S. Embassy currently has no information that necessitates a change in the security situation during or immediately after the primary elections. Elections in Honduras have been historically peaceful. As always the Embassy advises all U.S. citizens to avoid demonstrations and spontaneous gatherings. However, U.S. citizens are reminded that even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent with little or no warning. Heavy traffic delays and congestion may occur around or near polling stations.
The U.S. Embassy recommends that all U.S. citizens monitor media coverage of local events and be alert to the possibility of demonstrations and large gatherings. Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
