Embassy Statement on the Recent Events at UNAH

This week, the U.S. Embassy met with members of the Honduran National Police, human rights organizations, and other interested parties to discuss the unfortunate events that transpired at UNAH on September 8. The discussions were productive, and provided these groups the opportunity to share their perspectives on this incident. We will continue to maintain an open dialogue with these groups, and encourage all parties involved to maintain open lines of communication going forward.

The U.S. Embassy calls on the Honduran National Police to ensure the physical safety of both the protesters and the members of the surrounding community and require its officers to maintain high ethical standards and avoid excessive use of force when applying the law.

The U.S. Embassy reiterates the fundamental rights of freedom of speech and peaceful protest in a democracy, and encourages all sides to exercise restraint and respect the principles of human rights and the rule of law.
