We are monitoring closely the post-election situation in Honduras.
We are pleased Honduran election authorities completed the special scrutiny process in a way that maximizes citizen participation and transparency. This is an important step in achieving a final election result.
We continue to support efforts of the international election observation missions, which are working with Honduran political leaders and authorities on measures to increase the transparency of the process.
We encourage Honduran political leaders to support such measures consistent with Honduran law to ensure a result that represents the will of the Honduran people as expressed in the November 26 election.
We lament last night’s violence, which is unacceptable and cannot be justified under any circumstances. We underscore the need for a transparent, impartial, and timely determination of the election result.
