The U.S. Embassy has received information about multiple marches and demonstrations occurring in Tegucigalpa this afternoon. The Embassy expects major traffic thoroughfares in Tegucigalpa to be affected. Previous marches have been large and peaceful, but as always, U.S. citizens are reminded that the tone of any large public gathering can change quickly. Please plan your travel appropriately.
American Citizen Services has also received information about possible marches and/or demonstrations occurring in San Pedro Sula. Although previous marches in Honduras have been large and peaceful, U.S. citizens are reminded that the tone of any large public gathering can change quickly. Please be alert and avoid these gatherings if encountered. We recommend monitoring local media for additional information on demonstrations in San Pedro Sula.
We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Honduras enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
Regularly monitor the State Department’s website at Department of State Website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, (including the Travel Warning for Honduras), Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution. Read the Country Specific Information for Honduras at Country Specific Information. For additional information, refer to “A Safe Trip Abroad” on the State Department’s website.
