Location: Honduras, countrywide
Event: Demonstrations/strikes are expected to take place beginning today, May 30, 2019. Teachers and health professionals plan to hold a nationwide 48-hour general strike, accompanied by protests in the major cities in Honduras, to demand the repeal of two decrees related to education and health. Students, other activists, and workers from other economic sectors, e.g., bus and taxi drivers, may participate in support of these protests.
Business closures and blockades by protesters on roads are likely within Tegucigalpa, other cities, and major highways countrywide. Within Tegucigalpa, blockages may occur near the areas of Carrizal (CA-5 exit to San Pedro Sula), Colonia Cerro Grande (RN-15 exit to Olancho), exit to the South (CA-5 to Choluteca), Villanueva (CA-6 to Danli), Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras (UNAH), and the Universidad Pedagogica Francisco Morazan. Other smaller-sized protests will likely occur unannounced or with little notice throughout this period, which will impact traffic.
U.S. government personnel have been advised to minimize unnecessary travel in Tegucigalpa and around the country.
The U.S. Embassy remains open as we continue to monitor developments.
